HEAT 10

In this tenth issue of HEAT compelling new fiction from prominent Australian novelists Gillian Mears and Nicholas Jose, and American short-story writer Mary Jane Ryals. And chapter 9 of Anna Couani’s paranoid thriller serial The Western Horizon.

In the literary essays, poet and critic Fay Zwicky writes on Russian-Jewish author Isaac Babel, Venezuelan poet Eugenio Montejo celebrates “the white workshop”, Adam Geczy argues against the contemporary over-use of the first person in fiction, and Gary Simes explores the different realms of Antipodean English.

We publish a tribute to the verse portrait, one of the most undervalued genres of poetry, with poems by Tatamkhulu Afrika, Susan Yuzna, Geoff Page, Judith Beveridge, Peter Boyle, Lisa Jacobson, Hazel Smith and Alex Skovron, with a portrait in prose by Inga Clendinnen.

Poetry also in a section called Topographies, featuring poetic landscapes by Ken Bolton, S.K. Kelen and John Hawke, and a mapping of the city of Manchester in an essay by social scientist Nikos Papastergiadis.

In the visual arts, Helen Macallan writes on the latest work of the Sydney video artist John Conomos, and we feature Eugenia Raskopoulos’ new photographic series with(out) voice.
