HEAT 7

HEAT 7 introduces the poetry of the Slovenian poet Tomaž Šalamun, and offers a foretaste of Murray Bail’s long-awaited new novel Eucalyptus. In a series of essays on heroes (and villains) Evelyn Juers writes on Janis Joplin, Simon Petch on Elvis Presley, Inga Clendinnen on Norman Mailer and Jack Ruby, and Alberto Manguel remembers his Argentinian school-friends, and the teacher responsible for their disappearance. There is a feature on the poet John Anderson, who died last year, and an essay on grief by Gail Jones.

George Alexander takes on the art critic Robert Hughes; the British poet Simon Armitage writes about his childhood travels with his father, a used-tyre buyer; and John Vallance explores the whackiness of Aristotle’s Problems.

There is new fiction from Greece, Australia and the Czech Republic, and new poetry by Robert Adamson, Ania Walwicz, James Tate, Eugenio Montejo, Vivian Smith, Cassie Lewis, Deborah Staines, Antigone Kefala, Sylvia Fischerová, Cassie Lewis, Eric Beach, Susan Hawthorne, Peter Kirkpatrick and others, as well as graphics by Denis Mizzi and photographs by Polixeni Papapetrou and Robert Colvin.

Yellow is my favourite colour. If red is fire and passion, and blue is calm water, yellow is a flower. Yellow is very few things? Famously: sunflowers, cheese, taxis, bees, rubber ducks. The child’s sun is yellow. As is what I used to call, as a child, ‘normal yellow butter’ (margarine). ‘Yellow’ is fun to […]
