HEAT 7 introduces the poetry of the Slovenian poet Tomasz Salamun, and offers a foretaste of Murray Bail's long-awaited new novel Eucalyptus. In a series of essays on heroes (and villains) Evelyn Juers writes on Janis Joplin, Simon Petch on Elvis Presley, Inga Clendinnen on Norman Mailer and Jack Ruby, and Alberto Manguel remembers his Argentinian school-friends, and the teacher responsible for their disappearance. There is a feature on the poet John Anderson, who died last year, and an essay on grief by Gail Jones

George Alexandertakes on the art critic Robert Hughes; the British poet Simon Armitage writes about his childhood travels with his father, a used-tyre buyer; and John Vallance explores the whackiness of Aristotle's Problems
