Lucy Van writes poetry and criticism. Her poetry collection, The Open (2021), was listed for the Stella prize. With Anne Maxwell, her new book is Australian Women’s Historical Photography: Other Times, Other Views (2024). Her forthcoming title is MATERIAL (2025). She is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne, where she teaches literary studies.

I picture Berger writing this at his home in Quincy in the Haute-Savoie region of France in 1998. My picture has him holding his head in his hands. Why did it occur to him, the notion of writing this letter in this way? What does he mean by this ‘deep past’ offering ‘meagre’ yet ‘massive’ support of resistance? He’s flirting freely here – even for him –with the mushy vagueness. And: what’s the secret of the stones?

When I tune into the auction behind my screen door, the river of words I hear is not allegro. It’s not even andante. My neighbour’s auction is surely largo. Or, it is lento. Is our bard any less terrifying? No.
